How it works
How Does Mighty K9 Work? The Claimed Mechanism and What Is Known
Mighty K9 is bacon-flavored olive oil with 1.6 mg of ESS60, a C60 carbon molecule, in each 2 mL serving. The sales page says C60 works as an antioxidant that protects joint cells. That idea comes from lab and rodent work (Baati et al., 2012) (Grohn et al., 2021). No study has tested ESS60 or Mighty K9 in dogs with stiff joints.

The basics
What is Mighty K9 and how does it work?
Mighty K9 is a liquid oil drop for dogs that you mix into food. The brand says its ESS60 ingredient acts as an antioxidant for joint comfort, but that has not been tested in dogs.
The bottle is amber glass and holds 2 fl oz (60 mL) amber glass dropper bottle. Each serving is 2 mL, and there are 30 servings per bottle. That works out to about one month for one dog at one serving a day.
Only three things are inside: Extra Virgin Olive Oil, ESS60 and Bacon Flavor. The front of the bottle reads "Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil · Contains 100% ESS60 · Bacon Flavor." It is not a chew, a tablet or a capsule.

The claim
How is Mighty K9 supposed to help dog joints?
The sales page says ESS60 is a strong antioxidant that protects joint cells from oxidative damage. It links that to joint comfort, everyday stiffness, cartilage and "cellular aging."
Oxidative stress is real biology. Cells make unstable molecules as they burn fuel, and too many can damage tissue. Antioxidants neutralize some of them. The open question is whether 1.6 mg of C60 a day changes anything inside a dog's joints.
| Step in the story | What the sales page says | What is known |
|---|---|---|
| C60 is an antioxidant | "172 times more powerful than Vitamin C" | No study is named for that number. A C60 maker's site repeats a similar line, also without a study (SES Research, n.d.). |
| The dog absorbs it | Not explained | Not measured in dogs taking ESS60. |
| It reaches the joints | Protects joint cells | No canine data on joint tissue. |
| Joints feel better | Joint comfort, less stiffness | No trial in dogs with joint problems. |
| Slower aging | Supports cellular aging | Rat data (6 per group) points one way; a larger mouse study found no benefit (Baati et al., 2012) (Grohn et al., 2021). |

Day to day
How do you give Mighty K9 each day?
Four steps, from the dropper to the 30-day check.
The label lists a 2 mL serving. The sales FAQ says to mix it into your dog's food once daily. The sales page also says it can be given directly. Most owners pick one meal and stick to it.
- 01
Fill the dropper to 2 mL
The label lists a 2 mL serving and 30 servings per bottle. Check the sales page serving guide or your vet for small dogs.
- 02
Mix it into food
The sales FAQ says to mix it into your dog's food once a day. Most dogs take the bacon-flavored oil with wet food or kibble.
- 03
Keep one steady time
Pair it with the same meal every day, such as breakfast. A routine is the only way to judge any supplement.
- 04
Watch for 30 days
Note stairs, car jumps and walk length. Decide before the 30-day guarantee window closes.
Small dogs, puppies and dogs with health problems: check the sales-page serving guide and ask your vet before the first dose. More detail on our how to use Mighty K9 guide.
The active ingredient
What is ESS60, the C60 in Mighty K9?
ESS60 is a trademarked C60: a ball-shaped molecule built from 60 carbon atoms. People call it a "buckyball" because it looks like a soccer ball.
Because C60 will not dissolve in water, it is sold dissolved in oil. Mighty K9 uses extra virgin olive oil. Per 2 mL, the label lists 1.6 mg of ESS60. That is 0.8 mg per mL, the same strength used in the best-known rat study (Baati et al., 2012).
The label does not name the company that makes ESS60. We could not confirm who owns the trademark, so we do not guess. Our ESS60 ingredient profile lists everything we could verify.
In a 2021 mouse study, C60 in olive oil turned toxic after a few days of light exposure (Grohn et al., 2021). Keep the amber bottle capped and out of sunlight. The label images we have print no storage directions.
The evidence
What does C60 research actually show?
The research is small, mixed and mostly in rodents. One tiny rat study looked promising; a larger mouse study did not.
| Study | Animals | What happened | Limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Baati 2012 (Baati et al., 2012) | Rats, 6 per group | Median lifespan about 42 months on C60 in oil, 26 on olive oil, 22 on water | Exploratory; tiny groups; tapering dose, not daily |
| Grohn 2021 (Grohn et al., 2021) | Mice, larger groups | No lifespan or healthspan benefit; light-exposed C60 oil was toxic | Mice, not dogs; but a bigger, controlled test |
| Burres 2024 (Burres et al., 2024) | Rats, 14 days | No adverse effects up to 3.8 mg/kg a day | Short-term only; authors linked to a C60 maker |
| Hui 2023 (Hui et al., 2023) | 6 beagles, 9 days | One blood marker (CRP) fell | No control group; grape seed oil; about 150 mg a day |
The beagles got nearly 100 times the C60 in one Mighty K9 serving, and they did not have joint problems. Our post on C60 lifespan studies in rats vs mice walks through both rodent papers.

What Mighty K9 does not do
Mighty K9 is not a veterinary drug, a pain reliever or an arthritis treatment. It is a flavored oil sold as a canine supplement.
- It is not a glucosamine or fish-oil product. Olive oil is not a meaningful source of EPA or DHA omega-3s.
- It does not replace a vet exam. A limp that lasts more than a day or two needs one, and severe or sudden lameness needs one right away (Cornell Riney Canine Health Center, n.d.).
- It adds 16.2 calories a serving. In a small dog, that is a real share of the day's food.

Rules
Does the FDA approve Mighty K9?
No. Mighty K9 is not an approved animal drug, and FDA does not approve supplements for dogs before they are sold.
The human supplement law does not cover animal products (FDA, 1996). U.S. law has no "dietary supplement" category for animals. A product for dogs is either an animal food or a drug (AAFCO, n.d. (food vs drug)). Claims to treat disease, or to change how the body works beyond nutrition, can make a product an unapproved drug (FDA, n.d. (labeling and claims)).
For contrast, Librela, an injection your vet gives monthly for osteoarthritis pain, went through FDA approval in 2023 (FDA, 2023 (Librela)).
Federal rules also expect a pet food label to name the manufacturer or distributor and its location (FDA, n.d. (labeling and claims)). The label images we have do not show one. Check the physical bottle, or read our Mighty K9 label breakdown.
Bottom line
So, does the Mighty K9 mechanism hold up?
The routine is simple: one 2 mL serving of bacon-flavored olive oil in food each day. The antioxidant idea behind ESS60 is plausible on paper, but it rests on rodent work with mixed results. Weight control, exercise and vet care come first; see our claims vs evidence review. Try it, if you like, as a low-stakes 30-day experiment with a guarantee, not as joint care on its own.
FAQ
How Mighty K9 works: common questions
What is Mighty K9 meant to do for dogs?
The brand says its ESS60 ingredient, a form of C60, acts as an antioxidant that protects joint cells from oxidative damage. You mix one 2 mL serving of the olive oil into food each day. No study has tested this mechanism, or the product, in dogs with joint problems.
What does C60 do in the body?
In lab tests, C60 can neutralize some unstable oxygen molecules, which is why it is sold as an antioxidant. In animals the results are mixed. A small rat study reported longer lifespans, while a larger mouse study found no lifespan or healthspan benefit.
Is ESS60 the same as C60?
ESS60 is a trademarked C60 ingredient dissolved in olive oil. The Mighty K9 label prints 1.6 mg of ESS60 per 2 mL serving but does not name who makes it. We could not verify the trademark owner, so we treat it simply as a branded C60.
Why is C60 mixed in olive oil?
C60 does not dissolve in water, so it is carried in an oil. Olive oil is the classic choice because the well-known rat study used it. In Mighty K9 the olive oil is nearly the whole serving, which is why each dose adds 16.2 calories.
Does Mighty K9 start working right away?
Nothing on the label or in published research says how fast it works, because it has not been studied in dogs. Give it at the same meal daily, track a few simple signs, and judge it within the 30-day guarantee window.
Is Mighty K9 a pain reliever for dogs?
No. Mighty K9 is not a pain reliever, a veterinary drug or an arthritis treatment. If your dog limps, cries out or will not use a leg, see your vet. Never give a dog human pain medicine without a vet's advice.
Can I give Mighty K9 with my dog's other supplements?
Probably, but check with your vet, especially if your dog takes prescription medicine or is on a low-fat diet. Mighty K9 is pure fat, so add its 16.2 calories to the treats and toppers your dog already gets.
