Omega-3 vs C60 for Dog Joints: What the Research Reviews Found

Quick answer

Omega-3 fish oil has the best evidence of any joint supplement for dogs. Two research reviews singled it out (Vandeweerd et al., 2012)(Barbeau-Gregoire et al., 2022). C60 has almost no dog data: one 9-day study in 6 beagles (Hui et al., 2023). Mighty K9 is olive oil with 1.6 mg of ESS60 (C60) per serving, not a fish oil. Ask your vet before combining the two.

The big picture

What do research reviews say about dog joint supplements?

Most joint supplements for dogs have weak evidence. One group stands out: omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil.

A 2012 systematic review looked at 22 papers on joint nutraceuticals, 16 of them in dogs. Its authors called the evidence poor for almost everything. The one exception was diets supplemented with omega-3 fatty acids in dogs (Vandeweerd et al., 2012).

A larger 2022 review pooled 72 trials, 69 of them in dogs. Omega-3 diets and supplements again showed the clearest results (Barbeau-Gregoire et al., 2022).

Neither review covered C60. Almost no one has studied it in dogs, so there was nothing to include.

Fish oil

How strong is the omega-3 evidence for dog joints?

It is the strongest of the supplements, but still modest. The benefit shows up in controlled trials, yet the size of the effect is not dramatic.

A good example is a multicenter trial run in U.S. veterinary practices. Dogs with osteoarthritis ate either a fish-oil enriched diet or a control diet for up to 24 weeks (Roush et al., 2010). Some owner-rated measures favored the fish-oil diet, but the differences were limited.

What "omega-3" means here

The studied fats are EPA and DHA. They come mainly from fish and other marine oils. When a vet talks about omega-3 for joints, they usually mean a fish-oil product or a joint diet with added EPA and DHA.

Many veterinary plans add omega-3s to pain control, weight control and exercise (AVMA JAVMA News, 2021).

Glucosamine and chondroitin

Do glucosamine and chondroitin help dog joints?

The research says probably not. The 2022 review found a "very marked non-effect" for glucosamine and chondroitin and suggested they no longer be used for arthritis pain (Barbeau-Gregoire et al., 2022).

An earlier review called the evidence limited and conflicting (Bhathal et al., 2017).

Why they stay popular anyway

They are widely sold and rarely cause problems. Joint issues also have good and bad days, so a good day after starting a chew can feel like proof.

Mighty K9 contains neither. See the full list on our ingredients page.

C60

What is the evidence for C60 in dogs?

There is very little. The only dog study we found gave 6 beagles C60 in grape seed oil for 9 days and measured one blood marker (Hui et al., 2023). It had no control group, the dogs did not have arthritis, and each dog got about 150 mg of C60 a day.

That is nearly 100 times the 1.6 mg of ESS60 in one Mighty K9 serving. The rest of the C60 story comes from rodents. A small rat study reported longer lifespans (Baati et al., 2012). A larger mouse study found no lifespan or healthspan benefit (Grohn et al., 2021). Neither looked at joints.

The bars compare one serving's ESS60 per kilogram with that rat-study dose.

  • Toy dog, 3 kg

    0.53 mg/kg

    Rat study1.7 mg/kg
  • Small dog, 5 kg

    Rat study1.7 mg/kg
  • Giant dog, 30 kg

    0.05 mg/kg
One serving3% of the rat-study dose
    Rat study1.7 mg/kg

Our arithmetic: 1.6 mg of ESS60 per 2 mL serving divided by body weight, next to the 1.7 mg/kg dose in the 6-rats-per-group study (Baati et al., 2012). Rats got that dose on a tapering schedule, not every day for life. A dose that worked in rats is not a dose for dogs, so do not give more than the label serving unless your veterinarian says so.

The sales page calls ESS60 "172 times more powerful than Vitamin C." It names no study for that figure.

Side by side

Omega-3 vs C60 vs glucosamine: how do they compare?

Fish oil has the most support, glucosamine the most doubt, and C60 the biggest gap.

A common mix-up

Is olive oil a source of omega-3 for dogs?

No. Olive oil is mostly a different kind of fat, and it is not a meaningful source of EPA or DHA. So Mighty K9 does not replace a fish-oil supplement.

Not all oils do the same job. Fish oil brings the omega-3s that the joint trials tested. Olive oil is the carrier for ESS60 in Mighty K9, and the reason each 2 mL serving is 100% fat with 16.2 kcal.

More on the base oil.

Your vet

Can you give fish oil and Mighty K9 together?

Ask your veterinarian first. Both are fats, and adding two oils at once raises calories and total fat in the bowl.

That matters for dogs with a pancreatitis history, since high-fat foods are a risk factor (Steiner, Merck Veterinary Manual, 2025), and for dogs that need to lose weight. Treats and extras should stay under 10% of daily calories (Tufts Your Dog, n.d.).

  1. Bring the labels

Show your vet both bottles, or photos of both labels. Point out the 2 mL serving and 16.2 kcal on Mighty K9.

  2. Ask about the plan

Ask whether a fish oil or a joint diet makes more sense first.

  3. Add one thing at a time

Start one product, wait a few weeks, then add the next.

Limping is a vet visit

A limp that lasts more than a day or two, crying out, or a dog that will not use a leg needs a veterinary exam (Cornell Riney Canine Health Center, n.d.). No supplement replaces that.

Bottom line

Which is better for dog joints, omega-3 or C60?

On today's evidence, omega-3 fish oil. It has trials; C60 does not. That does not mean C60 is harmful at the label amount; it means no one has tested it for dog joints.

What Mighty K9 does offer

  • Three ingredients, all printed on the label.
  • The ESS60 amount (1.6 mg) and calories (16.2 kcal) are both shown.
  • A bacon-flavored liquid that mixes into food once a day.

What it does not offer

  • No EPA or DHA, the omega-3s the joint trials used.
  • No study of ESS60 or this product in dogs with joint problems.
  • No glucosamine, which matters little given the reviews.

FAQ

Omega-3 and C60 for dogs: common questions

Is fish oil or C60 better for my dog's joints?

Fish oil has far more support. Two systematic reviews found omega-3s had the clearest evidence among joint nutraceuticals in dogs (Vandeweerd et al., 2012)(Barbeau-Gregoire et al., 2022). C60 has one short beagle study and no joint trials.

Does Mighty K9 contain omega-3?

Not in a meaningful amount. The label lists extra virgin olive oil, ESS60 and bacon flavor. Olive oil is not a real source of EPA or DHA, the omega-3s tested in dog joint trials, so Mighty K9 does not stand in for a fish-oil product.

Can fish oil and Mighty K9 be given together?

Ask your vet first. Both add fat and calories, and each Mighty K9 serving is 16.2 kcal of pure fat. Dogs with a pancreatitis history or on a weight plan need extra care with added oils (Steiner, Merck Veterinary Manual, 2025).

Does glucosamine work for dogs?

The evidence is weak. A 2022 review of 72 trials found a marked lack of effect for glucosamine and chondroitin and suggested they no longer be used for arthritis pain in pets (Barbeau-Gregoire et al., 2022). Earlier reviews also called the data limited and conflicting (Bhathal et al., 2017).

Has C60 been tested in dogs with arthritis?

No. The only dog study we found used 6 healthy beagles for 9 days, with C60 in grape seed oil at about 150 mg a day (Hui et al., 2023). It did not use ESS60, olive oil, arthritic dogs or a control group.

How long does omega-3 take to work in dogs?

Trials ran for weeks to months; the fish-oil diet trial cited here lasted up to 24 weeks (Roush et al., 2010). Expect any change to be slow and modest, and track walking, rising and stairs with your vet.
