How to Spot Fake Pet Supplement Reviews Before You Buy

Quick answer

Watch for sudden bursts of five-star reviews, vague stories with no dog details, stock-photo faces and big round customer counts no one can check. Since 2024, an FTC rule bans fake and bought reviews (FTC, 2024). A useful review names the dog's size, age, time on the product and what else changed. This site shows no Mighty K9 reviews until they match real orders.

The law

What does the FTC's 2024 rule say about fake reviews?

It bans them. On August 14, 2024, the Federal Trade Commission announced a final rule against fake reviews and testimonials (FTC, 2024).

The rule covers more than invented praise. It targets:

  • Reviews from people who never used the product, including AI-written ones.
  • Buying positive reviews, or negative ones about a rival.
  • Insider reviews from staff or family without a clear disclosure.
  • "Independent" review sites that the company secretly controls.
  • Hiding or suppressing honest negative reviews.
  • Fake social media signals, such as bought followers or views.

The FTC can now seek civil penalties against companies that knowingly break it. That raises the stakes, but it does not make fakes disappear.

FTC advice

How does the FTC say to judge online reviews?

Check the source, read several sites, and be wary of sudden bursts of reviews. The FTC also suggests looking at a reviewer's history (FTC, n.d. (online reviews)).

The agency is frank about the limits. It says telling real from fake reviews is often nearly impossible. It also warns that fakes may avoid perfect ratings so they seem more believable.

Use more than one kind of source

The FTC suggests mixing customer reviews with impartial expert sources. For dog joint products, that means your vet and published research, not just star ratings. Our editorial standards explain how we pick sources.

Warning signs

What are the red flags of fake pet supplement reviews?

The biggest red flags are timing, vagueness and numbers you cannot check. Any one may be innocent; several together deserve doubt.

Timing

Sudden bursts

Dozens of reviews in a few days, often right after launch, then silence.

Story

Vague praise

"My dog loves it, amazing product!" with no breed, age, size or time frame.

Photos

Stock faces

Polished headshots that show up on other sites under other names. A reverse image search can tell.

Numbers

Big round counts

Claims no one can check, such as "trusted by thousands," with no way to verify who.

Speed

Overnight change

A stiff old dog "running like new in three days." Joint changes, when they happen, are slow.

Wording

Copy-paste phrasing

Several reviews that repeat the same phrases or the brand's own ad lines.

Side by side

Real or fake: how do dog supplement reviews differ?

Real reviews are specific and a little messy. Fake ones tend to be short, glowing and generic.

What helps

What does a useful dog supplement review include?

A useful review lets you compare the reviewer's dog with yours. It gives facts first and feelings second.

  • The dog's breed, age and weight, such as 10 kg (22 lb).
  • Why the owner tried it, and what the vet said first.
  • How long the dog took it, and how it was given.
  • What else changed at the same time: diet, weight, medicine, exercise.
  • What the owner measured, such as walk length or stair use.
  • Any stomach upset, refusals or weight gain.
  • Whether the product was bought or given free.

For a fat-based drop like Mighty K9, weight change is worth noting. Each serving adds 16.2 kcal, which matters more for small dogs.

Joint products

Why are joint supplement reviews so hard to trust?

Because owners judge joint comfort by eye, and hope shapes what we see. Even honest reviewers can be fooled by normal good and bad days.

Joint signs come and go with weather, activity and weight. A dog that starts a supplement during a mild spell may look better for reasons that have nothing to do with the bottle. Many owners also start a vet's pain medicine, a diet or more walks at the same time.

That is why controlled trials matter. Among joint supplements for dogs, only omega-3 fish oil shows reasonable evidence in reviews of those trials (Vandeweerd et al., 2012). No study of Mighty K9 or ESS60 in dogs with joint problems has been published.

On this site

Why does this site show empty Mighty K9 review slots?

Because we have no verified reviews yet, and we will not invent them. The slots fill only with reviews we can match to a real order.

The material we received for the brand included sample star ratings, order counts and named reviewers. It was layout copy, not real customers, and the face photos with it are not customers either. We do not print any of it. The sales page also shows large customer counts that we cannot verify, so we do not repeat them.

Quick check

How can you check pet supplement reviews in five minutes?

  1. Sort by newest

Look for bursts on the same few dates.

  2. Read the 3-star reviews

They are often the most detailed and honest.

  3. Search a face

Run a reverse image search on reviewer photos.

  4. Check other sites

    Compare what independent sources say.

  5. Ask your vet

Your vet knows your dog, which no reviewer does.

FAQ

Fake pet supplement reviews: common questions

Are fake reviews illegal in the U.S.?

Yes. The FTC's final rule, announced August 14, 2024, bans fake reviews and testimonials, bought reviews, undisclosed insider reviews and company-run "independent" review sites (FTC, 2024). The FTC can seek civil penalties against companies that knowingly break it.

How can you tell if a pet supplement review is fake?

Look for bursts of reviews on the same dates, vague praise with no dog details, stock-photo faces and repeated phrasing. The FTC warns that spotting fakes is often nearly impossible, so use several sources, including your vet (FTC, n.d. (online reviews)).

Are Mighty K9 reviews real?

We have not verified any Mighty K9 reviews, so we do not publish a rating, count or quote. The review slots on this site fill only with reviews matched to real orders. Customer counts on the sales page are unverified, so we do not repeat them.

Why do some fake reviews give 4 stars instead of 5?

To look believable. The FTC notes that fake reviews may avoid perfect ratings for exactly that reason (FTC, n.d. (online reviews)). Judge a review by its details, not its star count.

Are reviews on Amazon or Chewy more reliable?

Big marketplaces have more reviews and some verified-purchase labels, but the FTC still advises checking reviewer history and watching for bursts (FTC, n.d. (online reviews)). Before trusting any listing, make sure the seller is real; see our where to buy page for Mighty K9.

What should a good dog supplement review mention?

The dog's breed, age and weight, how long the product was used, how it was given, what else changed, any side effects, and whether the product was bought or free. Without those details, a review tells you very little about your own dog.
